Dear Friends of the Queen Theatre,
The Downtown Bryan Association has undertaken the responsibility of facilitating the acquisition
and restoration of a community icon – The Queen Theater. Our first objective is the purchase of the theatre.
We need to raise $200,000 to buy the property before the end of 2010.
Our second objective is to raise the funds to replace the tattered, leaking roof that is responsible for
deterioration of much of the interior of the building. Until we can replace the roof, the interior will be at
risk of further decay and collapse. Plans are already underway to clear debris from the interior, remove
the old roof and replace it with a structurally sound roof made of durable modern materials.
The third and most visible goal for our efforts is to restore the beautiful Art Deco facade of the building,
including the jewels of the Crown - glowing neon tubing and twinkling lights. When we achieve the restoration
of the facade, we can all consider this most compelling aspect of the project a crowning success!
However, we will not consider our job finished, and funds permitting, we will not stop there.
Restoration of the Queen Theatre has been a prominent topic of discussion in our community for
decades but nothing has been done. If we do not act now, we may lose our chance. We are committed to
continuing the interior restoration until we have a facility in downtown Bryan that can be used by the community.
Many ideas for the ultimate use have been suggested already and many of them are wonderful
ideas. But no idea is feasible until we actually own and stabilize the building.
In asking you for your support, we are fully aware of the many other causes in our community that are
certainly worthy of support. Many of these are focused on doing something for others who are not as fortunate
as ourselves and we do not want to detract from those efforts. This project is something that we, as
a community, can do for ourselves – to make OUR community a better place to live and work and something
that we can look at when it is finished and be proud that we have contributed to our community’s
image and spirit. This is something really special that we can enjoy and, in turn, it can add to the enjoyment
of so many others!
Our plan is for this to be a community project, not a government project. Rather than appeal to a small
number of affluent contributors, we decided early on not to accept donations towards the purchase price
that were greater than $1,000 from any individual or business. We understand that our decision may make
our fundraising more difficult but we truly feel that this should be a broad-based community effort.
Please help now to Save the Queen by making a generous contribution and joining others who feel this
is a worthwhile community project. The Downtown Bryan Association is a 501(c)3 corporation. Contributions
will be tax deductible in accordance with IRS rules. Please send your check, for $1000 or a lesser
amount, made payable to the Downtown Bryan Association - Save the Queen, 213B South Main Street,
Bryan, TX 77803.
